Wednesday's a hoppin'

Today I'm participating in not one, but two....that's right two....bloghops. I say that like I'm some wordsmithing powerhouse, but hey...it's the little things, right?

Anywho...on to the hops!!

First up is a neat little excursion I saw over on Alison's Geek Banter blog. She and Jamie from Mithril Wisdom want to know what some of our favorite games are and how do we enjoy "Leveling Up!".

I realize that I'm going to be giving my age away here, but I remember when the only 'video' type game out there was the original Pong. I got it one year, for Christmas, and played the crap out of it....figuratively speaking, of course.

Pong was great until the advent of Atari, where I got hooked on Space Invaders. From there it was the original Nintendo where my friends and I would have have all nighters playing Castlevania. Now that was a hard game....but lots of fun and many hours of sleep were sacrificed in defeating Count Dracula!

Two of my all time favorite games are the first Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior 3 for the original Nintendo. In fact, I have the first Final Fantasy game downloaded onto my Wii and still play it when I'm feeling nostalgic.

These days, though, my favorite game would have be (as cliched as it is) World of Warcraft. It's an MMO (Massively Multi-player Online) RPG (Role Playing Game) where you play with millions (in WoW's case) of other players.

One of the reasons this game will always hold a special place in my heart is that it's where I met my wife. She was one of those millions of players who I happened to start talking to and interacting with. Things progressed into the physical world and the rest, as they say, is history.

To this day, we still play and are hopeless alt-aholics. We have our own mini-launch parties with each new expansion and just have a great time playing the game.

World of Warcraft, as silly as it sounds, helped me to level up in the real world as well as the virtual one.

Some honorable mentions from other game genres:

Board Games: Clue, Monopoly, Descent.

Card Games: Munchkin, Magic the Gathering, Euchre

Table Top Role Playing Games: Champions, Feng Shui, D.C. Heroes

Cue cartoon hopping sound effects....

Now, springing to the next hop....

Elise Fallson and her blogging buddy Michelle Wallace at Writer in Transit have put together a very creative and fun hop to celebrate their one and two year. respectfully, blogging anniversaries.

They've provided the pictures and we're supposed to provide the captions and we got bonus points if we use the words twist, cheek, buzz, honour, grey, champagne, tango, and vomit.

Here goes....

Panel 1:

M-- "Elise, you do realize that you have to get into  the balloon before it takes off, right?

E-- "No really? I thought I'd just put a new twist on things and jog next to it."<smirks>

Panel 2:

M--"Will you stop fooling around and get up here. It's tough to steer this thing with a buzz from the champagne. I need another drink."

E--"I'm working on it, but I need to make sure my skirt doesn't fall. I wouldn't want that lurking dragon to see me 'turn the other cheek', as it were....ahem."

Panel 3:

Hero--"Never fear ladies...Major Vomit is here! I bet you're wondering about the name....well...it's a long story and...."

Panel 4:

Major Vomit--"Ooooffff!"

Panel 5:

M--"When I said I needed a 'drink' this wasn't what I meant. I'm just sooo glad we had the honour of being rescued by this doofus."

Panel 6:

E--"The Major obviously proves the fact that you don't need a lot of grey matter to be a super hero. Ugh...we're soaking wet!"

M--"I think I heard a combination of a 'splash' and a 'thud'. Sounds like The Major is following the law. The law of gravity."

Panel 7:

Dragon--"O.k, I guess I should explain why I've been lurking in the background....you see, I've been trying to learn the tango and...."

M--"Nope, not interested sorry. Hurry Elise, we need to get back behind our keyboards where it's safe. This way back to  the blogosphere!!"

Congrats to Elise and Michelle. Here's to many more years of blogging and having fun doing it!

I love that you met your wife through WoW; it's one of the great things about gaming is that it an bring people together.

Yay for Munchkin and Magic the Gathering!

The old school Castlevania was tough, as I remember it. What the hell did we do before the days of autosave?

Thanks for taking part in the blogfest, Mark!

Fun comic. I haven't signed up because I'm not sure I can come up with anything for it. You did a great job though.

ah, i remember space invaders, the munching marching!

and great comic! you used the words very well too!

Love the story how you met your wife. Yeah for WoW! And great job with the captions. Love the snark and the giggles. Thanks Mark for participating! :D

Now the vomit makes sense. The hero has a V on his cape. And there always seems to be some weirdo lurking in the back.

Kim Van Sickler said...

Coming up with a superhero name for V wasn't easy was it. Funny that you worked one of the assigned words in to do the trick. Valiant job.

If you remember the old Atari then maybe you recall the game Adventure, which was one of my faves. My brother and I have been waiting since then for games to get as good as Skyrim is now.

Enjoyed reading your blog this morning about the games you enjoy the most! Monopoly and Clue are my all time favorites...they too are on club pogo where I am a member. Thanks for sharing!! Sandy

Man, I used to stay up late with my brother and watch him play Castlevania for hours! And I'd play Magic the Gathering with him too. Good times. Another card game I like is Gloom. Very dark and fun to play, plus the transparent cards are just cool! :D

Came across your blog via Morgan Shamy's. Nice to *meet* you!

Wesley Copeland said...

I started to play WoW. Then realised if I continued I would never, ever, ever stop playing.

Even though it's lookin' a bit dated now, it's still the best MMO out there.

Mark Means said...

@Jamie: Agreed...gaming does bring people together and that's one of it's best aspects. The first game I played with a fixed save point, I felt like I hit the lottery:D Thanks for hosting!

@Mark: Haha...thank you!

@S.P: Thanks, I found a site where you can make them as I was writing the post. http://thetural.com/wow/...fun stuff :)

@Tara: Space Invaders is definitely one of the classics and thank you :)

@Elise: Thank you very much and a great idea by you both. Congrats again.

@Stephen: Yes, you really have to watch out for those lurking types :)

@Kim: Thank you! I thought it might make for a fun hero and I pictured him as having some sort of 'super projectile vomiting' power. Hey, I've seen stranger :D

@mshatch: Oh yeah, I definitely remember Adventure...fun game :)

Mark Means said...

@Sandy: Thank you very much, I appreciate that :) Oh yes, I'm a big Monopoly and Clue fan, as well. Timeless games.

@Sherri: Thank you and, yes, it was a pretty interesting process in regards to our courtship :)

@Sydney: As cheesy as it looks today, it's fun to remember Atari as being "the thing" back when there was nothing else. :)

@nutschell: Check out the link I put up and it should answer a lot of your questions :) Just be careful not to get hooked! (hehe)

@Cortney: Yes, definitely a lot of good times with the old NES. I've never heard of Gloom...I'll have to check that out and very nice to 'meet' you, as well :D

@Wesley: It sounds like you had better foresight than me....I'm hopelessly hooked!! :) Oh well, there are worse things to be hooked on...

Great captions Mark, especially the (ahem) cheeky ones!
Thanks for participating in the bloghop. I've had such a good laugh reading all the entries.

Very interesting story on how you met your wife and that's a cool marriage achievement award.

Castlevania was a hard game. Much, much too hard for me. I could never get anywhere with that one.

One of my favorite features on the Wii is the ability to download the classic games. I went for Super Mario Brothers and all the Legend of Zelda games.

Mark Means said...

@michelle: Thank you and congrats again...it was a fun idea for a celebration :)

@M.J: I have both of those on my Wii too and, totally agree, that's one of it's best feature. Would you believe I never played the original Zelda back in the day? It's funny to play it now, but still kind of hard!

Dropping by from the Level Up Bloghop. I got introduced into the Final Fantasy series by way of Number 7, however, I'm trying to play them all. I started the first one just recently and I can totally appreciate why people got hooked in the first place.

I like how you started out with your old favorite and worked up to today's game and how you met your wife.

That is awesome that you met your wife through WoW! I've met lots of great friends through video games (non-gamer friends often might raise an eyebrow at this, but it's just as good a place as any to make friends, I say!). Thanks for participating int he blogfest :)

Major Vomit is so funny, especially since a friend recently told me that she drank to much and had 'major vomit'! I'll now always think of Major Vomit to the rescue...Funny captions.

That was great!
Showing my age as well, but I remember playing Pong with my brother. Coolest dumbest game ever.
And my wife is a D&D geek just like me.

Christine Rains said...

You have the same favorite video games as I do! I remember when Pong first came out too. I was mesmerized. That's sweet you met your wife on WoW. I met my husband online back in the days when it was still creepy.

Golden Eagle said...

I've never played World of Warcraft. Great story about how you met your wife. :)

I love your captions!

Mark Means said...

@The Capillary: Hey there and thanks for hopping over. I guess it was a mix of there being nothing like it, at the time, and the immersion that I felt by getting into that game, but it's always been a favorite of mine. One of the gaming franchises I truly enjoy.

@Susan: Thank you :) I'm not sure if that's the exact way it was supposed to be presented, but it seemed logical to me

@Allison: Totally agree...in fact, I think it's better than meeting at a bar or something :) Thanks for hosting such a fun event!

@Texas: Thank you! It was just one of those things that sprang into my mind. Not sure if that's, necessarily, a good thing or a bad thing.

@Alex: Thank you very much :) I agree about Pong. These days it seems so silly but was so great back when we didn't have anything else. If you're wife is a D&D geek, then you are, indeed, a lucky man.

@Christine: You have great tastes indeed!! It was still considered a bit 'creepy' when I met my wife...especially by her family..so I know what you mean. It's great how people can meet like that, though.

@Golden Eagle: WoW is fun as well as addicting, fair warning :) Thank you very much!

I must be close to your age because I definitely played pong and was stoked when Atari came out. My son loved Castlevania on his DS. Your cartoon is hilarious, too. Way to double the blogfest trouble!

Mel Kinnel (@TizMellyMel) said...

They didn't even let the poor dragon tell it's story. LOL!

Mark Means said...

@Julie: Thank you and, yes, the Major could use some flying lessons :D

@Shell: More than likely, though I won't ask yours...I just turned 45. Thanks for the compliment on my entry, I appreciate it :)

@Melissa: I know!! Those meanies....oh wait...I wrote that so.... :)

My bro had an Atari too (it was a hand me down) and we played Space Invaders. I saved up for my own SNES and bought it when I was 12. :)

I have known many people who met their spouses online via this sort of game. Mostly I've known people who met through a Wheel of Time website I belonged to. :)

walk2write said...

Very creative bubbling! I stopped by to thank you for visiting and leaving a comment on my post about the Blue Angels. It's good to know that someone else out there appreciates them.

I'm giving away my age now, but I remember playing Duck Hunt and Mario Brothers with our kids when they were 10 and 12!

Laura Clipson said...

Aww I love that you met your wife online, I'm no good at games like that but my sister plays them a lot, and she's got a close friend who she now sees in real life who she met in World of Warcraft. It's nice that the relationships created in game can progress to real life relationships.

Al Diaz said...

YOu don't need grey matter to be a superhero? Well, why didn't you say so before? Off to buy a cape!

Maurice Mitchell said...

What a great story! Like Match.com only with ogres. Great post man

Mark Means said...

@Trisha: I definitely spent way too much time playing Space Invaders and I loved my SNES too. It was like having an arcade in your bedroom :)

@walk2write: You're welcome and, like I said, I love the Pensacola area and the Blue Angels, as well. I look forward to seeing more of your posts on the area. Good to see you brought your kids up right, with Mario Brothers :D

@Laura: I know a few people who met on WoW and, I guess, it's not as novel a concept as it used to be. Still cool, though.

@Al: Haha...I'll meet you at the cape store :)

@Maurice: Thank you and I've never thought of it like that before :D

Carl V. Anderson said...

We must be a similar age because I fondly remember when Pong was released and how much it blew me away. My brother and I spent many an hour playing that game and then eventually graduated up to the Atari and I have a ton of great memories there as well. I think Defender was the game I played the most on Atari, getting to the point where I could play for hours without dying and would have to just quit playing. Fun times!

Tyrean Martinson said...

That's cool that you met your wife through WoW. The only reason my husband and I don't play that game is . . .we're both afraid it would suck us in and we would never leave. It sounds awesome, and seriously addictive. Glad to hear that it's had a positive impact on your real world life!

And your cartoon is awesome - love that the dragon wants to learn to Tango!

Mark Means said...

@Carl: They sure were fun times. Back then, it seemed, even the simple things could occupy us for hours :)

@Tyrean: Haha, well, as I said, we're pretty much hooked, but we've been that way for a while. We have come to a point where we can moderate it a bit, though. It's a very fun game, no doubt.

Carl V. Anderson said...

So true! I could spend hours outside by myself just imagining scenarios and playing, let alone the long games of Star Wars and other make believe games we would play when the neighborhood got together.

Anonymous said...

Love that you met your wife on WoW :) Such a great story :)

Chancelet said...

Good one Mark. And what's the back story on Sir Vomit? Think it's great that they say behind a keyboard is safe. Maybe that's my problem...I need to think of this as a safe place. Novel idea. :)

Hi Mark,

Really delighted to be seeing your slant on those captions from the blogging anniversary celebration of Elise and Michelle. Very clever and imaginative angle from your good self. All these blog hops and blogfests, oh my, I think I shall continue with my satirical postings on them :)

Be well, my friend.

Gary

Mark Means said...

@Carl: Yep, that used to be one of my favorite games..."Let's Pretend"

@planningwithprintedportal: Yes, it definitely makes for interesting conversation, too :)

@Nancy: Hmmm...maybe Super Projectile Vomiting?? hehe

@Gary: Thank you, my friend :) Yes, sometimes they can be a bit much...especially when you 'double book' them :D Always a lot of fun though. Take care of yourself!
